May 16, 2007 was one of the happiest and devastating days of my life. We already knew that we were pregnant, and we had 3 blood tests already to check my HCG levels. Everyone else that I had talked to never heard of someone getting there levels checked that many times. Well, when we went to our ultra sound on the 16th, we found out why our levels were tested so much. We are having twins! I never thought those words would be coming out of my mouth. But there they were looking like little pinto beans laying back to back with little flickers for heart beats. This is where the roller coaster began. The ultra sound tech couldn't find a membrane between the two "fetus" (that is the last time you will here me say that word I think it is so insensitive). Not only were we having twins, but our twins were the rarest of twins. Mono Mono twins. Meaning they have one placenta so they are identical and they are in the same amniotic sac. This poses many problems, the biggest being that their cords can get tangled very easily. The doctor that was there said that I would surely be going on bed rest by 24 weeks with this diagnosis.
I had to go back to work with this devastating yet exciting news. We are having twins! Kyle didn't have to work, he didn't have school. The only thing he had to do was to go back home and do all the research he could possibly fit in and worry himself to death.
The next morning Dr. Caligaris my OB/GYN called me and said he was not very confident that they are Mono Mono twins. He said that it was too early to diagnose for us to wait for 4 weeks, and we will go for our 2nd ultra sound. With being a high risk pregnancy, we will have to see the doctor every 3 weeks, and get an ultra sound every 4 weeks.
What had we gotten ourselves into?
